Fearing a Future Baseball Strike/Lockout

If the picture above frightens you, hang onto your seats. We are in the final year of the current MLB contract and unless the owners and players can come to agreement before December 1, we are in for trouble again. As usual it comes down to money. In a season that looks more exciting than ever, with innovations making it a more exciting and fan friendly game, I am afraid they are about to screw it up again.

While a salary cap/ceiling system is anathema to the player’s union I far they are looking at it all wrong. Football, basketball and hockey have figured out that they are selling their sport as a product, not any particular franchise or player. As a fan of a small market team (Cincinnati Reds) we cannot generate the revenue to compete in an unregulated free market for talented players. That allows teams like the Yankees and Dodgers an unfair advantage.

Don’t screw up baseball. Keep our sport going in 2027. My Reds are just getting rolling.
