New York Theatre Spotlight

Several Big Apple Theatre notes to catch up on.  First two shows ending at the end of the month:

“A Blanket of Dust” is a show I reviewed here on June 18.  I had several disagreements with the script but found the performances riveting.  Always be open to seeing points of view different from your own and listen carefully.  The limited run ends June 30 and is at The Flea Theater.  To save you money should you choose to see it, here is a discount code:

Second is a show I reviewed on June 5 and has announced a closing for June 30.  “A Letter to Harvey Milk” is an amazing chamber musical that I fear will disappear after it closes.  If at all possible go to see this gem at the Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row.

Most Broadway shows shoot for fall or spring openings but there are a crop of interesting summer shows coming.  “Head Over Heels” uses music from The Go-Go’s to tell their extravagant tale opens at the Hudson Theatre on July 26 (previews now open) with encouraging advance word of mouth.  Second Stage Theatre’s new Broadway home The Helen Hayes Theatre gets “Straight White Men” on July 23 (previews start June 29).  Ken Davenport’s “Getting the Band Back Together” starts previews at the Belasco on July 19 and opens August 23.  Perhaps most interesting is a new musical based on the movie “Pretty Woman” which starts previews July 20 and opens August 16 at the Nederlander.  Bet that sounded like a solid property until the #MeToo movement blossomed forth.  Will be interesting to see how they thread this needle.
