Today, Thursday, August 24, is National Waffle Day. The first United States patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869. Thank you, Mr. Swarthout. Waffles are one of my favorite foods. I have a terrific recipe using my sourdough starter and think I will make some today.
One of my guilty pleasures is the Waffle House chain. I’m a sucker for their pecan waffle and sausage. Fortunately there are none near where I live in New York. NYC has lately been invaded by Dairy Queen, 7-11, and other national chains in the last decade but Waffle House hasn’t yet expanded to here. If If they ever did, I’m a goner. I know exactly where one of the closest Waffle House restaurants can be found in south east Pennsylvania and I always stop there whenever I take a motorcycle trip south.
The schedule for many National Days can be found at http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com if you are interested. Don’t worry, I’ll be showing you some of my favorites in the coming blog posts. Can you please pass the syrup? Thanks….
