First MANHATTANHENGE of the new decade

Grab your camera or your smart phone and wake up early tomorrow New Yorkers. Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 7:20 AM will be the first Manhattanhenge sunrise of the year, and in some reckoning, the new decade. (for more on that topic stop by https://walterthinnes.blog/2020/01/01/happy-new-year-the-decade-question/)

For you Big Apple newbies this is the date (one of four each year – two sunrises and two sunsets) when nature lines up the sun to be framed perfectly within our city grid system on cross streets. Though some clouds are expected, we might catch a break and get some beautiful shots. And there is something new this year. The city has severely limited automobile traffic on 14th Street, one of the best places to catch a great view. It is thus a tad safer to stand in the middle of the street to snap your photo. Just do me a favor and try not to get hit by a bus in the process. Promise? Me, I’m going to sleep in so just send your shots to my Twitter account.
