Kenneth Lonergan is having quite a time lately on Broadway. Widely respected as a writer of scripts for Off-Broadway and regional theatre and recognized as an expert screenplay writer, he has had three of his back catalogue brought to the Main Stem.
The Waverly Gallery (as of this writing with only one week remaining at the Golden Theatre) comes to the stage expertly directed by Lila Neugebauer. With the exceptional cast of Elaine May, Lucas Hedges, Joan Allen, Michael Cera and David Cromer it is a joy to watch. While much has been made of Ms. May’s return to Broadway after decades away, every one of the performers carries off their role and shines in the effort. Mr. Cera is now three for three in interpreting Mr. Lonergan’s work and I have been lucky to have seen the entire trio.
Of his recent Great White Way hits, I feel the best script and execution was the recent Lobby Hero, I am thrilled that this is part of the season of excellent plays. If you haven’t already, get there to see it.
