Review – Jerry Springer the Opera

The only times I have seen The Jerry Springer show has been at doctor’s offices because it was on daytime TV as I waited for an appointment.  I recognized what has become a meme immediately in the Off-Broadway show currently at the Signature Theater courtesy of The New Group.

This show is pretty much a two joke premise (crass Americans in Act One, religious posturing in Act Two) but oh, boy, what terrific jokes.  The oratorio music cover keeps the humor hopping with coarse and bawdy themes set to heavenly music.  The set ups and take downs are fast and furious.  I was kept laughing from start to finish.

If you don’t like cursing or mocking religions stay away.  But if you want a hilarious, set ’em up, knock ’em down laugh fest from start to finish, be there and be there soon.  While a terrific show, not sure it can last or transfer in a tourist friendly theater industry.  I haven’t had such a free wheeling laugh in a very long time and I could happily see it again.  “Talk to the stigmata.”  “Dip me in chocolate and throw me to the lesbians.”  “I’ve had my Jerry Springer Moment.”  And I want it again!
