Special 3 Day Throwback on a 60th Birthday Part 1

On this day, April 24, in 1964, a beautiful baby was born. It turns sixty years young today and is a long term favorite of mine. I managed the New York State Theater (since renamed the David H. Koch Theater) from 2000 to 2003 and it was a memorable experience. During these next three days, I will be featuring several photos from the archives in a special Throwback Series.

Above you can see early construction underway as they begin to lay the foundation. You will note the Lincoln Center Plaza under construction with Philharmonic Hall (since renamed Avery Fisher Hall) already finished. The Met Opera would follow farther to the left. The neighborhood around Lincoln Center has also, of course, changed drastically over the years. In the next few days I will show more views internally and externally. Below you can see a later stage of the construction. Here you can see the stage, audience rings, and Lobby Promenade taking shape. You can also see the multi-leveled basement structure of the Met Opera taking shape.
