An Interesting Playwriting Exercise

Recently I was contacted by The Pulp Stage, (www.pulpstage.org) a theatre company based in Portland, Oregon. They had read one of my short plays on The New Play Exchange and wanted to offer me an agreement to write a new short play with them. The pay was only a small royalty, but they would work with a small group of writers in their particular method, present the plays in an online showcase, and the rights to the script afterward would remain with me. Sounded interesting so I signed up, not knowing quite what to expect.

Their mission is: To inspire and empower the creation of theatre by generating exciting, easy-to-stage plays. They focus on oral storytelling traditions, using primarily dialogue to achieve character goals.  They feature stories of science fiction, horror and suspense.  My writing in the supernatural realm is limited but I am always seeking to use dialogue to forward the action so I could use the practice. We’ve had a couple of remote sessions and in response to the challenge I have written a brand new short play from scratch. Using guidance and input from their Artistic Director John Marks and two fine writers in the workshop, Alicia Whavers and Scott C. Sickles, I am nearly finished with a new script currently titled “Leave Me A Message.”

I won’t go into any details on the script in progress but I am very pleased with the result and grateful for the input from my compadres. The three finished scripts will be presented in what they call The Pulp Factor Workshop on Monday, April 1, 2024 at 9:00 PM Eastern Time for a one-time live reading of the short plays by actors assembled from the company. There is no cost to attend (but expect a fund raising pitch from the not for profit company). At a later date the script readings will be programmed into their regular podcast feed, but here is where you can find the live event:

I’ll post a reminder in this blog on the morning of the April 1 reading on their YouTube live channel. I hope you can join us for the event to see newly created theatre. Should be fun.
