National Eat Your Jello Day. Really?

When I was growing up Jello was not my favorite dessert. It seemed so simple and well, not sure how to say this, but watery. It was after all gelatin set in water. I preferred richer and more complex desserts. It was a little better when set with marshmallows and fruit.

There was after more to it. But I tolerated it because my parents had limited funds and my appetite was voracious. So I had lots of marshmallow and grape desserts.

But I recently became aware of an absolutely revolting marketing for Jello. If you are eating please finish your meal before reading any further. Luckily my mother was not aware of this idea because it was never served to us or so I remember.

Ewwwwww. Don’t confuse Jello and aspic and please don’t serve up your vegetable leftovers in a sweet gelatin base. This marketing campaign was published on May 11, 1959 and thankfully never again. I hope the entire marketing team that came up with this rotten idea was canned.
